DOMAIN NAME
What is a domain name?
It's the unique name which identifies you on the internet. eg: yourbusiness.com.au.
It's what people enter into a web browser to find you, usually with
a "www" in front of it.
How much does it cost?
It can vary but work on a maximum $140 to register it for two years.
Are there any rules?
Yes. There's plenty.
The basic rules are that your domain name has to refer to your business name, a product or service you offer or an event you are involved with.
Can I have more than one?
Yes. In fact it is usually a good idea to register your domain name with the .com.au and .net.au suffix.
As long as you stick to the rules you can have multiple domains.
For example Holden would have the domain name holden.com.au because it is their business name. They might also register commodore.com.au and monaro.com.au because they are products they sell.
SERVER
What is a server?
A server is a computer which is connected to the "backbone" of the internet. Your website has to sit on a server so it is accessible at all times on the internet.
Essentially you rent space on a server for your website.
Youonline is not a hosting company however we have our own servers which exclusively host our client's websites.
Can I have my own server?
Certainly. However the costs for things like hardware, software, security and bandwidth make it prohibitive and unnecessary for just about all businesses. Most websites use only a small percentage of a server's resources so it makes sense to rent space on a server with other websites and share the costs.
IMAGES
Can I control the images on my website?
We can build your site in such a way as you can control the images.
With images however you will need some technical knowledge, the minimum being that you understand how to resize and crop.
